Getting a Marriage License in Montgomery County

Both applicants must appear together in person at any of the three Montgomery County Clerk locations. Each person needs a valid photo ID and their Social Security number. No blood test is required. Under Texas Family Code Chapter 2, both parties must be at least 18 years old.

The standard fee is $81. Couples who complete the free Twogether in Texas premarital education course pay only $21 when they show the certificate at the time of application. The certificate must be current within one year. Completing the program also waives the standard 72-hour waiting period required by Texas Family Code Section 2.204. Without the certificate, you must wait 72 hours after getting the license before the ceremony can take place.

Licenses are valid for 90 days from the issue date and can be used anywhere in Texas. If yours expires before you marry, you apply again. Informal marriage licenses cost $46. Certified copies of a license cost $6 each; plain copies are $1 each.

Certified copies of Montgomery County marriage licenses can only come from the Montgomery County Clerk. The Texas DSHS Vital Statistics Section maintains a statewide marriage index from 1966 forward and issues $20 verification letters, but cannot provide certified copies. You must go to the county where the license was filed.

You can order copies online through Montgomery County's online ordering portal at montgomerytxvitals.permitium.com. In-person requests can be made at any of the three clerk office locations. Mail requests go to P.O. Box 959, Conroe, TX 77305. Include full names of both parties, approximate marriage date, and payment. Certified copies cost $6 each.

Informal Marriage in Montgomery County
