Getting a Marriage License in Fort Bend County

Under Texas Family Code Chapter 2, both applicants must appear in person together at the clerk's office. Each must be 18 or older, bring a valid photo ID, and provide their Social Security number. No blood test is required. Texas has no residency requirement.

A 72-hour waiting period applies after the license is issued. The Twogether in Texas premarital education program waives this wait and significantly reduces the fee. Complete the approved course and present the certificate at application. The certificate is valid for one year from completion. Without it, you pay the full fee and wait 72 hours before the ceremony.

The license is valid for 90 days. Do not let it expire before your ceremony. After the ceremony, the officiant signs the license and returns it to the Fort Bend County Clerk within 30 days. The clerk files it and sends a copy to the state vital statistics unit. Note that Texas does not issue marriage certificates. The marriage license itself is the legal record.

Certified Copies and Copy Request Process

Fort Bend County has a detailed process for obtaining certified copies of marriage licenses. The Fort Bend County courts portal explains the difference between unofficial and certified copies. Unofficial copies available through the online search tool or printout are watermarked "For Informational Purposes Only" and cannot be used for legal, government, or official proceedings. Certified copies, issued directly by the County Clerk, carry a raised seal, signature, and security features that verify authenticity.

To order a certified copy, first search for your license number using the online search tool. Then complete the Marriage License Copy Request Form. You can submit the request in person at 301 Jackson Street, by mail, by email, or through the authorized vendor VitalChek. Payment is required at the time of the request. Call 281-341-8652 to confirm the current fee and acceptable payment methods.

Certified copies are accepted for name changes with the Social Security Administration, passport applications, insurance updates, and similar legal needs. The Texas DSHS Vital Statistics unit also maintains a statewide marriage index from 1966 forward and can issue verification letters for $20.
