Getting a Marriage License in Guadalupe County
Both applicants must appear in person at the County Clerk's office in Seguin. Valid photo ID is required for each person. A driver's license, passport, certified birth certificate issued within the past ten years, or military ID all qualify. Both must provide their Social Security numbers. Both must be at least 18 years old. Under Texas Family Code Chapter 2, a license issued in Guadalupe County is valid for use anywhere in Texas.
After the license is issued, a 72-hour waiting period applies before the ceremony can take place. Couples who complete the free Twogether in Texas premarital education program get a $60 discount and waive the waiting period. The certificate must be presented at the time of application and is valid for one year. The license expires 90 days after issuance. If no ceremony takes place within that window, a new application is required. Once the ceremony occurs, the officiant must return the completed license to the county within 30 days.
Note: Texas does not issue marriage certificates. The license is the legal document. Certified copies of the license come from the county clerk.
