Comal County Satellite Offices
Beyond the main New Braunfels courthouse location, Comal County operates two satellite offices to serve residents in Sattler and Bulverde. This is particularly helpful for residents in the northern parts of the county who would otherwise need to drive to New Braunfels for clerk services.

Getting a Marriage License in Comal County
Both applicants must appear together at a Comal County Clerk location during the marriage license service hours. Each person needs a valid photo ID and must provide their Social Security number. No blood test is required. Both must be at least 18 years old. Under Texas Family Code Chapter 2, a Comal County license is valid anywhere in Texas.
The standard fee is $81. Couples who complete the Twogether in Texas premarital education course pay only $21 and have the 72-hour waiting period waived. Texas Family Code Section 2.204 requires a 72-hour wait from the time the license is issued. Without the Twogether certificate, plan your ceremony date at least 72 hours after your clerk appointment. The license is valid for 90 days from the issue date.
Note that the main office is closed from noon to 1 PM daily, and marriage licenses are only issued during the specific window of 8 AM to 11:30 AM and 1 PM to 4:30 PM. Plan your visit accordingly to avoid arriving during the closed lunch period.
Certified Copies of Comal County Marriage Records
Certified copies of Comal County marriage licenses come only from the Comal County Clerk. The Texas DSHS Vital Statistics Section maintains a statewide index from 1966 and can issue verification letters for $20, but that office cannot provide certified copies. Only the county that issued the original license can do that.
You can request a certified copy in person at the main New Braunfels office or a satellite location. For mail requests, write to 150 N Seguin, Ste. 1037, New Braunfels, TX 78130. Include both parties' full legal names, the approximate marriage date, and payment by check or money order. Certified copies carry the clerk's seal and are valid for name changes, passport applications, insurance matters, and other official uses.
Under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 194, the clerk sends a copy of each marriage license application to the state vital statistics unit within 90 days of the application date. This is how the statewide index gets built and maintained.
What Comal County Marriage Records Contain
Comal County marriage license applications follow the statewide format. Each record includes both parties' full legal names, dates of birth, home addresses, and Social Security numbers. It records the license issue date, ceremony date and location, the officiant's name, and prior marriage history for each party. Both parties sign under oath before the county clerk.
The statewide DSHS index covers marriages from 1966 forward. Comal County's own records go back to the county's formation in 1846. For marriages before 1966, the county clerk in New Braunfels is the only source. The statewide index is searchable under both parties' names.
Informal Marriage in Comal County
Texas recognizes informal marriage under Family Code Section 2.401. Couples in Comal County can register an informal marriage at the county clerk's office by signing a Declaration of Informal Marriage. This creates a permanent public record with the same legal standing as a formal marriage license.
Without a signed declaration, three elements must all exist to establish the informal marriage: both parties agreed to be married, they lived together in Texas as spouses, and they represented themselves to others as married. All three must be present at the same time. The declaration at the clerk's office provides clear documentation and eliminates uncertainty about the marriage's legal status.
