How to Get a Marriage License in Wilson County

Both applicants must appear in person at the clerk's office. Each person needs a valid photo ID. Texas requires both parties to be at least 18 years old. The standard marriage license fee is $81. If you and your partner complete the Twogether in Texas premarital course, the fee drops and the 72-hour waiting period is waived. Under Texas Family Code Chapter 2, a Wilson County license is valid for use anywhere in Texas.

The 72-hour waiting period means your ceremony cannot happen until 72 hours after the license is issued. This can be waived if one applicant is on active military duty or if a judge grants a waiver. If divorced, the divorce must be final for at least 30 days before you can apply for a new license, unless a court waives that requirement. Your Social Security number is required at the time of application.

The license is valid for 90 days from the date of issue. If the ceremony doesn't happen within that time, the license expires. You would need to apply again and pay the fee a second time. Make sure your ceremony date fits within the 90-day window before you apply.

Only the Wilson County Clerk can issue certified copies of marriages recorded in this county. The Texas Department of State Health Services Vital Statistics Section maintains a statewide index from 1966 and can provide a verification letter for $20, but it cannot produce certified copies. For a certified copy with the clerk's seal, you must go to or mail the Wilson County Clerk's office.

Wilson County also offers online records access through its website. Property alerts and online record search tools are available at wilsoncountytx.gov. For marriage records specifically, in-person or email requests are the approved methods. Include the full names of both parties and the approximate date of marriage when submitting any request.

The fee schedule effective January 1, 2024 sets copies at $1.00 per page and certification of copies at $5.00. Certified copies are accepted for legal purposes including name changes and insurance filings.

What Wilson County Marriage Records Contain

Wilson County marriage licenses follow the standard Texas format. Each record includes both parties' full legal names, dates of birth, addresses, and Social Security numbers. The license shows the date it was issued, the date of the ceremony, the location, and who performed it. Any prior marriages and how they ended are also noted. Under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 194, the clerk sends a copy to the state vital statistics unit within 90 days of the application.

Both the state and county records are public documents. The state indexes by both parties' names. Anyone can request a copy if they provide enough identifying information to locate the record.
