Getting a Marriage License in Grayson County
Both applicants must appear in person at the County Clerk's office in Sherman. Valid photo ID is required for each person. A driver's license, passport, certified birth certificate issued within the past ten years, or military ID all qualify. Both parties must provide their Social Security numbers and must be at least 18. Under Texas Family Code Chapter 2, a license issued in Grayson County is valid statewide and can be used for a ceremony anywhere in Texas.
A 72-hour waiting period applies after the license is issued. Couples who complete the free Twogether in Texas premarital education course get a $60 discount and waive the waiting period. The certificate must be presented at the time of application and is valid for one year. The license itself expires 90 days after issuance. If no ceremony has taken place by then, a new application is required. The officiant must return the completed license to the county within 30 days of the ceremony.
Note: Texas does not issue marriage certificates. The license is the legal document. Certified copies of the license are what the clerk provides for official use.
