Getting a Marriage License in Eastland County
Under Texas Family Code Chapter 2, all marriage licenses in Texas follow the same core rules regardless of which county issues them. Both people must appear in person. Both need valid photo ID and their Social Security number. No blood test is required in Texas.
After you get the license, you must wait 72 hours before your ceremony can take place. This waiting period is set by state law and applies to nearly all couples. There is one way to avoid it. If you and your partner complete a state-approved premarital education course through the Twogether in Texas program, you can skip the wait. The course also earns you a discount on the license fee. You must bring the completion certificate when you apply. It must be current, not expired.
The license is valid for 90 days from the date it is issued. If you do not have your ceremony within that time, it expires. There is no way to extend it. You would need to apply again and pay the fee again. Plan your ceremony date before you visit the clerk so the timing works out.
Note: Texas does not issue marriage certificates. The legal record of your marriage is the marriage license itself. Certified copies of the license serve as proof of marriage for legal and government purposes.
Certified Copies of Marriage Licenses
If you need proof of a marriage that took place in Eastland County, the County Clerk is the only source for certified copies. The Texas Department of State Health Services keeps a statewide marriage index from 1966 forward and can issue a verification letter for $20, but that letter is not the same as a certified copy. For a certified copy you must go to the county that issued the license.
To request a certified copy from Eastland County, you can visit the clerk's office in person during business hours. For a mail request, send your written request with the full names of both parties, the approximate date of the marriage, and payment for the applicable fee. Call the clerk to confirm the current copy fee and accepted payment methods before sending a mail request. Include a self-addressed stamped envelope for return of the document.
Certified copies carry the clerk's official seal and signature. They are accepted for name changes with the Social Security Administration, passport applications, insurance updates, and other legal purposes. Plain informational copies are also available at a lower cost if you just need the record for personal reference and do not need the official seal.
Historical Marriage Records in Eastland County
Eastland County has marriage records going back to 1874. Early records from Marriage Book I (1874-1882) have been documented through genealogical societies and are available through research resources. These early records are valuable for family history research.

FamilySearch provides free access to indexed records and, in some cases, scanned images of original documents. The Texas DSHS vital statistics unit also maintains a statewide index of marriages from 1966 to present. For pre-1966 records, the county clerk's older books are the primary source.
Genealogical societies active in the region have published transcriptions of early Eastland County marriage records. Local libraries and the Texas State Library and Archives in Austin may hold copies of these publications. If you are researching a marriage from the 1800s or early 1900s, those resources are worth checking alongside the county clerk's holdings.
Informal Marriage Registration
Texas recognizes informal marriage under Texas Family Code Section 2.401. If a couple has lived together as spouses, agreed to be married, and presented themselves to others as married, they may have a valid informal marriage under Texas law. To make this official on record, the couple can sign a Declaration of Informal Marriage at the Eastland County Clerk's office.
Filing the declaration creates a public record of the marriage. That record has the same legal standing as a formal marriage license. It can be used as proof of the marriage relationship for legal, financial, and government purposes. If you are in an informal marriage and want a documented record, ask the clerk for the declaration form. The fee for filing is set by the state.
What the Records Contain
An Eastland County marriage license application includes both parties' full legal names, dates of birth, home addresses, and Social Security numbers. It also shows where each person was born and whether either has been married before. If a prior marriage ended, the record will note whether it ended by death, divorce, or annulment.
The completed license shows the date it was issued, the date of the ceremony, where the ceremony took place, and the name of the person who performed it. The officiant signs the license and returns it to the county clerk within 30 days of the ceremony. Under Texas law, the clerk then sends a copy to the state vital statistics unit for inclusion in the statewide index. Both the county record and the state index are public records. Anyone can request a copy by providing enough information to locate the specific record.
