Getting a Marriage License in Coleman County
Both applicants must appear together at the Coleman County Clerk's office during office hours. Each person needs a valid photo ID and must provide their Social Security number. No blood test is required. Both must be at least 18 years old. Under Texas Family Code Chapter 2, a Coleman County license is valid anywhere in Texas.
The standard fee is around $81. Couples who complete the Twogether in Texas premarital course pay only $21 and have the 72-hour waiting period waived. Without the certificate, Texas Family Code Section 2.204 requires a 72-hour wait between receiving the license and holding the ceremony. Keep in mind that processing stops before the office officially closes, so plan your visit early. The license is valid for 90 days.
Coleman County observes Good Friday, Memorial Day, and Juneteenth as holidays, among others. Check with the office for the current holiday schedule before planning your visit around those dates.
Certified Copies of Coleman County Marriage Records
Certified copies of Coleman County marriage licenses come only from the Coleman County Clerk. The Texas DSHS Vital Statistics Section maintains a statewide index from 1966 and issues verification letters for $20, but the state does not provide certified copies. Only the county that originally issued the license can do that.
To request by mail, write to 100 W. Live Oak Street, Suite 105, Coleman, TX 76834. Include both parties' full legal names, the approximate marriage date, and payment by check or money order. Certified copies carry the clerk's seal and are legally valid for name changes, passport applications, and other official needs. Under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 194, the clerk sends each application copy to the state within 90 days.
Coleman County Marriage Record Contents
Coleman County marriage license applications follow the state-prescribed format. Each record contains both parties' legal names, dates of birth, addresses, and Social Security numbers. It records the license issue date, ceremony date and location, the officiant's name, and prior marriage history for each party. Both applicants sign and take an oath before the clerk.
The statewide DSHS index goes back to 1966. Coleman County's own records extend back to the county's formation. For marriages before 1966, the county clerk in Coleman is the only source. The statewide index is searchable under both parties' names.
Informal Marriage in Coleman County
Texas recognizes informal marriage under Family Code Section 2.401. Couples in Coleman County can register an informal marriage at the county clerk's office by signing a Declaration of Informal Marriage. This creates a permanent public record with the same legal standing as a formal marriage license.
Without a declaration, three elements must all be proven: both parties agreed to be married, they lived together in Texas as spouses, and they represented themselves to others as married. All three must exist at the same time. The declaration at the county clerk's office is the simplest way to establish this legal relationship clearly.
