Getting a Marriage License in Bell County
Both applicants must appear in person at the Bell County Clerk's office in Belton. Each person needs a valid photo ID and their Social Security number. No blood test is needed. Both parties must be at least 18 years old. Under Texas Family Code Chapter 2, any license issued in Bell County is valid for use anywhere in Texas.
The standard fee is $81. If you complete the Twogether in Texas premarital education course, the fee drops to $21 and the 72-hour waiting period is waived. Without the course certificate, you must wait 72 hours after the license is issued before the ceremony can take place. The license is valid for 90 days. If your ceremony does not happen within that window, the license expires and you must start over.
Bell County also handles cases where one applicant is on active military duty. Contact the clerk's office directly for information on absent applicant procedures if your situation involves deployment or service in another country.
Bell County Online Records
Bell County offers several online tools for searching records. The county uses SUPERSEARCH, an OCR-based search system for property records, as well as CountyFusion Search for broader record access. Civil and probate case indexes are available online from October 1989 to present. Criminal case indexes are also searchable. Visit bellcountytx.com to access these tools.
For statewide marriage verification, the Texas Department of State Health Services maintains a statewide index of marriage license applications from 1966 forward. DSHS can issue a verification letter for $20 but cannot provide certified copies. Certified copies of Bell County marriage licenses must come from the Bell County Clerk.
Note: Bell County's property fraud alert system is also available online and allows residents to monitor their property records for unauthorized changes.
Certified Copies of Marriage Records
If you need a certified copy of a Bell County marriage license, contact the clerk's office directly by phone or in person. The vital statistics department handles these requests at (254) 933-5165. You can also email vital.statistics@bellcounty.texas.gov to ask about the process before you visit.
For mail requests, send to P.O. Box 480, Belton, TX 76513. Include the full names of both parties, the approximate date of the marriage, your contact information, and a check or money order for the applicable fee. Certified copies carry the clerk's official seal and are accepted for name changes, government filings, insurance updates, and similar uses.
Texas does not issue marriage certificates. The official document is the marriage license. Certified copies of the license are what you need for legal purposes.
What Bell County Marriage Records Show
A Bell County marriage license application includes both parties' full legal names, dates of birth, addresses, and Social Security numbers. It also shows the date the license was issued, the date of the ceremony, where the ceremony took place, and who performed it. Any prior marriages and how they ended are part of the record as well. Under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 194, the county clerk files a copy with the state vital statistics unit within 90 days of the application.
The statewide index is searchable by both parties' names. The county keeps the original license. Both records are public. Anyone can request a copy with enough information to identify the record.
Informal Marriage in Bell County
Texas law allows couples to register an informal marriage under Texas Family Code Section 2.401. In Bell County, you can do this by signing a Declaration of Informal Marriage at the clerk's office. This creates a public record with the same legal standing as a formal license. It costs less than a standard license and is an option for couples who want official documentation of a common-law marriage.
Without a declaration, a couple can still establish an informal marriage by proving three things: an agreement to be married, living together in Texas as spouses, and representing to others that they are married. If you want official documentation, the clerk's office has the form.
