Getting a Marriage License in Williamson County

Both parties must appear in person at the County Clerk's office. Each person needs a valid government-issued photo ID. The standard fee is $81. If you complete the Twogether in Texas premarital education program, the fee drops significantly and the 72-hour waiting period is waived. Under Texas Family Code Chapter 2, the license is valid anywhere in Texas.

Without the Twogether certificate, Texas law requires a 72-hour wait after the license is issued before the ceremony can happen. This waiting period can also be waived by a judge's order or if one applicant is on active military duty. Plan your timeline before you apply. The license is valid for 90 days from the issue date. If you don't marry within that window, it expires and you must apply again.

Both parties must be at least 18 years old. Anyone who has been divorced must wait 30 days after the divorce is finalized before applying, unless a court order waives that period. You'll also need your Social Security number at the time of application.

Note: Texas does not issue marriage certificates. The marriage license is the official record. Certified copies come from the clerk where the license was issued.

Certified copies of Williamson County marriage licenses must be requested from the Williamson County Clerk. The Texas Department of State Health Services maintains a statewide marriage index from 1966 forward. That index can provide a verification letter for $20, but it does not issue certified copies. Only the county where the license was issued can do that.

You can request a certified copy in person at the Georgetown office or by mail. Mail requests should include both parties' full legal names, the approximate date of the marriage, and payment for the applicable fee. Certified copies carry the clerk's seal and are accepted for legal purposes such as name changes, insurance updates, and government filings.

What the Marriage License Contains

A Williamson County marriage license follows the standard Texas format. It includes both parties' full legal names, dates of birth, addresses, and Social Security numbers. The record shows the license issue date, the ceremony date, the ceremony location, and the name of the officiant. Prior marriages and how they ended are also documented. Under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 194, the county clerk sends a copy to the state vital statistics unit within 90 days.

The state indexes the record under both parties' names. The county keeps the original. Both the county and state records are public documents. Anyone with sufficient identifying information can request a copy.

Informal Marriage in Williamson County

Texas recognizes informal marriage under Texas Family Code Section 2.401. Couples who want to document a common-law marriage can sign a Declaration of Informal Marriage at the clerk's office in Georgetown. This creates an official record with the same legal standing as a formal marriage license.

To qualify, both parties must be 18 or older. Without a signed declaration, a couple can still establish an informal marriage if they can prove three things: they agreed to be married, they lived together in Texas as a married couple, and they represented to others that they were married. The clerk's office can provide the declaration form. The fee for filing is $46.
