Certified copies of Lavaca County marriage licenses are available only from the County Clerk in Hallettsville. The state vital statistics office cannot issue certified copies. You can visit in person or mail a request. Include both names and the approximate date of the marriage when you write in.
Certified copies cost $6 each in Lavaca County. Plain (uncertified) copies cost less. If you need multiple copies for legal or administrative purposes, order them all at once to save on multiple trips or mail requests.
For marriages after 1966, the Texas Department of State Health Services has a statewide verification service. They charge $20 to search their index and provide a letter confirming the marriage was filed. This is not a certified copy but may be enough for some purposes. Contact the clerk at (361) 798-3612 to ask about mail request procedures and turnaround times.
What Lavaca County Marriage Records Include
Marriage license applications in Texas capture key details about both parties. The form records full names, dates of birth, residence addresses, and Social Security numbers. It also asks about prior marriages. When the ceremony is done, the officiant returns the signed license to the county clerk.
The returned license adds the ceremony date, the name and title of the officiant, and their authority to perform marriages. Under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 194, the clerk sends a copy to the state within 90 days of the application. This creates a dual record at both the county and state levels.
Texas marriage records are public. You don't have to be a party to the marriage to request copies. The records show names, dates, and ceremony information but not private financial details.
Informal Marriage Registration in Lavaca County
Texas law lets couples register an informal (common law) marriage by filing a Declaration of Informal Marriage with the County Clerk. Under Texas Family Code Section 2.401, you need to show that you agreed to be married, lived together in Texas as a couple, and held yourselves out to others as married.
Both parties sign the declaration together at the clerk's office in Hallettsville. The declaration goes into the public record and carries the same legal weight as a formal marriage license. It matters for property rights, inheritance, and other legal matters in Texas.
