Certified Copies of Cochran County Marriage Records
Certified copies of Cochran County marriage licenses must come from the Cochran County Clerk. The Texas DSHS Vital Statistics Section keeps a statewide index from 1966 and issues verification letters for $20, but the state does not issue certified copies. Only the county clerk where the license was originally issued can provide a certified copy.

Certified copies carry the clerk's seal and are valid for name changes, passport applications, insurance matters, and government filings.
Note: Under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 194, the county clerk sends a copy of each marriage license application to the state vital statistics unit within 90 days of the date of the application.
Cochran County Marriage Record Contents
Marriage license applications in Cochran County follow the statewide format. Each record lists both parties' legal names, dates of birth, addresses, and Social Security numbers. It shows when the license was issued, the date and place of the ceremony, the officiant's name, and prior marriage history for each party. Both parties sign and take an oath before the clerk at the time of application.
The statewide DSHS index covers marriages from 1966 forward. Cochran County's own records go back to the county's formation. The statewide index is searchable under both parties' names. For marriages before 1966, the county clerk in Morton is the only source.
Informal Marriage in Cochran County
Texas recognizes informal marriage under Family Code Section 2.401. Couples in Cochran County can register an informal marriage at the county clerk's office by signing a Declaration of Informal Marriage. This creates a permanent public record with the same legal force as a formal marriage license.
To prove an informal marriage without a signed declaration, three elements must all be present: both parties agreed to be married, they lived together in Texas as spouses, and they represented themselves to others as married. Signing the declaration at the clerk's office is the simplest way to create clear legal documentation of the marriage.
