Acceptable IDs include a driver's license, passport, state ID card, or military identification. You also need to provide a Social Security number, or a signed statement that you do not have one.

Under Texas Family Code Chapter 2, there is a mandatory 72-hour waiting period before the ceremony can take place. The license is valid for 90 days from issue. Certified copies of Sutton County marriage licenses must come from the Sutton County Clerk in Sonora. The Texas DSHS Vital Statistics Section holds a statewide index from January 1966 forward. The state can issue a $20 verification letter but cannot provide certified copies. Certified copies only come from the issuing county.

Contact the clerk's office with the full names of both parties and the date of the marriage. You can request a copy in person or by mail. Mail requests should include payment. Certified copies carry the clerk's seal and are accepted as legal documents for name changes, insurance claims, and government ID applications.

Informal Marriage in Sutton County

Under Texas Family Code Section 2.401, couples in Sutton County can register an informal marriage by signing a Declaration of Informal Marriage at the clerk's office. Both parties must appear and pay the fee, which is typically $46. The declaration becomes a public record with full legal standing.

If you do not register, an informal marriage can still be legally established by proving all three elements: agreement to be married, cohabitation in Texas as spouses, and representing yourselves as married to others. Registering is always the cleaner option because it eliminates the need to prove anything later.

Note: Texas informal marriages are not automatically recognized by the federal government or all other states.

What Marriage Records Include

Sutton County marriage license applications follow the state format required under Texas law. Each record includes both parties' full legal names, dates of birth, addresses, and Social Security numbers. The record also shows the date the license was issued, the date of the ceremony, the location, and who performed it. Any prior marriages and how they ended are included as well.

Under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 194, the county clerk must send a copy of the application to the state vital statistics unit within 90 days. Both the county file and the state index are public records. Anyone can request a copy with enough identifying information to locate the record.
