Getting a Marriage License in Irion County
The process for getting a marriage license in Irion County follows Texas state law. Both people who plan to marry must show up at the clerk's office together. Each person needs a valid government-issued photo ID such as a driver's license or passport. You will need to provide your Social Security number. No blood test is needed.
Texas law requires a 72-hour waiting period after you receive your license before the ceremony can take place. Section 2.204 of the Texas Family Code sets this rule. There is a way to waive that wait. If both of you complete the Twogether in Texas premarital education course, you present the certificate at the time you apply and the 72-hour wait is dropped. The course is free. The certificate also takes $60 off the license fee. The standard fee in most Texas counties is around $81. With the Twogether certificate that drops to about $21. The license stays valid for 90 days from issue. Plan your ceremony date before you go apply so the timing works out.
Note: Minors under 18 may not marry without a court order under Texas Family Code Section 2.003.

To request a copy in person, visit the clerk's office at 209 N. Park in Mertzon during business hours. For mail requests, send to P.O. Box 736, Mertzon, TX 76941. You can also contact the clerk by phone at (325) 835-2421 to ask about current procedures and fees before you send anything in.
Certified copies carry the clerk's official seal. They are accepted for name changes, insurance updates, government filings, and other legal purposes. Plain copies cost less and work fine for personal reference. Under Texas Health and Safety Code Section 194.001, the county clerk sends a copy of each marriage license application to the state vital statistics unit within 90 days.

Informal Marriage in Irion County
Texas law recognizes informal marriage, sometimes called common law marriage. Under Texas Family Code Section 2.401, a couple can establish an informal marriage in two ways. One is to sign a Declaration of Informal Marriage at the county clerk's office. This creates a formal public record. The other way is to prove all three required elements: an agreement to be married, living together in Texas as a married couple, and holding themselves out to others as married.
Once established, an informal marriage has the same legal standing as a ceremonial marriage. All community property rules apply. You must go through a formal divorce to end it. If you want a documented record, the Irion County Clerk can provide the Declaration of Informal Marriage form.
