Haskell County Clerk Office

The Haskell County Clerk is the official source for marriage records in this north-central Texas county. The clerk's office is at the courthouse in the city of Haskell. Staff process new license applications, maintain the official marriage index, and provide certified copies upon request. Because the county is rural, the same clerk also handles land records and court documents.

For records requests, you can visit in person or send a mail request. Either way, having the names of both parties and an approximate year is helpful. If you are not sure of the date, tell the clerk what you know and they will do their best to find the record. Haskell County has marriage records going back many decades.

Applying for a Marriage License

Both parties must appear in person at the Haskell County Clerk's office. Each needs a valid photo ID and their Social Security number. No blood test is required. Both must be at least 18 years old. Under Texas Family Code Chapter 2, a license issued here is valid for use anywhere in Texas.

The standard fee is $81. Couples who complete the free Twogether in Texas course and show the certificate pay only $21. The certificate waives the 72-hour waiting period that Section 2.204 otherwise requires. Without the certificate, you wait 72 hours after getting the license before the ceremony. The license is valid for 90 days. If the wedding does not happen in that time, the license expires. You must reapply and pay again.

Certified copies of Haskell County marriage licenses are available only from the Haskell County Clerk. The Texas DSHS Vital Statistics Section in Austin keeps a statewide index and issues verification letters for $20, but they do not issue certified copies. To get an official certified copy, you must contact the Haskell County Clerk directly.

Visit in person or send a written request by mail. Include the full names of both parties, the approximate year of marriage, and payment for the fee. Call ahead to confirm the exact fee. Certified copies carry the clerk's seal and are accepted for legal and government purposes. Plain copies are also available at a lower cost for personal use or research.

What Haskell County Marriage Records Show

Texas marriage license applications follow a state-required format. The record shows both parties' full legal names, birth dates, addresses, and Social Security numbers. It includes the date the license was issued, the date of the ceremony, the ceremony location, and the officiant's name. Prior marriages and how each ended are also documented. Under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 194, the clerk sends a copy to the state within 90 days, and the state maintains a searchable index. The county retains the original.

Informal Marriage in Haskell County

Texas allows couples to register an informal marriage at any county clerk's office. Under Texas Family Code Section 2.401, signing a Declaration of Informal Marriage at the Haskell County Clerk's office creates a public record with the same legal effect as a formal marriage license. Without the declaration, a couple can still prove an informal marriage existed by showing they agreed to marry, lived together as spouses in Texas, and represented themselves as married to others.

Once established, an informal marriage ends only through formal divorce. The Haskell County Clerk can provide the declaration form for couples who want an official record of their informal marriage.
