Getting a Marriage License in Carson County
Both applicants must appear together at the Carson County Clerk's office during business hours. Each person needs a valid photo ID. You must also provide your Social Security number verbally. No blood test is needed. Both parties must be at least 18. Under Texas Family Code Chapter 2, the license works anywhere in Texas once issued.
The standard fee is around $81. Complete the Twogether in Texas premarital course before applying and the fee drops to $21. The certificate from that course also waives the 72-hour waiting period required by Section 2.204. Without it, you must wait 72 hours after the license is issued before the ceremony can be held. The license expires after 90 days if unused.
Carson County is a small Panhandle county. Friday hours are shorter than other days, so plan to visit Monday through Thursday if possible. The office does not give legal advice. For legal questions about the marriage process, consult an attorney.

Carson County Marriage Record Contents
Marriage license applications in Carson County follow the statewide format set by the Texas Board of Health and DSHS. Each record includes both parties' full legal names, dates of birth, addresses, and Social Security numbers. The document records the license issue date, ceremony date and location, the officiant's name, and each party's prior marriage history. Under Texas Health and Safety Code Chapter 194, the county clerk files a copy with the state within 90 days of the application date.
These records are public documents. The statewide DSHS index covers marriages from 1966 forward. Carson County's own records go back further, and older marriage records are available directly from the clerk's office in Panhandle.
Informal Marriage in Carson County
Texas recognizes informal marriage under Texas Family Code Section 2.401. Couples can register an informal marriage at the Carson County Clerk's office by completing a Declaration of Informal Marriage. The declaration creates a permanent public record with the same legal standing as a formal marriage license.
Without a signed declaration, establishing an informal marriage requires proving three elements: both parties agreed to be married, they lived together in Texas as spouses, and they represented themselves to others as married. All three must coexist. Registering with the clerk avoids the uncertainty of proving these elements later.
